Book my skiing holiday in hell
Glenn McGrath’s maiden Test half-century at the Gabba yesterday was a masterpiece of cricket surrealism – not to mention a heartbreaking experience for the New Zealand team.
While Channel Nein deserved to be jeered yet again for crossing to the 6pm news in Sydney before he actually got there, they did get to show one of the most unforgettable images that I have ever seen on a cricket telecast. That being the look on Adam Gilchrist’s face in the Australian dressing room as he watches McGrath’s six soar through the air. You don’t have to be much of a lipreader to see Gilly exclaim “What the pharque” with the most amazing look of incredulity on his face.
Keith Miller dies
I have just learned of the passing of Australia’s greatest ever all-rounder, Keith Ross Miller. AAP has a brief report that Miller, who was 84, died this morning at a nursing home on Mornington Peninsula, Victoria.
He was one of my real cricketing heroes, indeed one of my favourite Australians of all time.
Clarkie!
It almost seems like destiny for Michael Clarke to get a ton on Test debut, and that’s how it panned out. Great knock from a player who really should have been in the Test team a year ago. He’s a very mature 23 year-old, and congratulations to him.
I am sure we have seen the start of a fine Test career, and probably someone who will become Australian captain – I’ll stick my neck out and say he will succeed Ponting in the role.
Congrats also to Anil Kumble on reaching 400 Test wickets. Now onto Warnie to make that world record his own!

Cricket’s global community expanded just a little further on Friday February 6 when the Netherlands Antilles hosted its first first-class cricket match. The Leeward Islands played host to the Windwards in their Carib Beer Series match at the Carib Lumber Ground, Philipsburg, Sint Maarten.
