How long before we see this at the SCG?

Filed under: Technology — Rick Eyre @ 12:00 am

Considering that Test cricket in Australia is sponsored by a mobile phone company, it can’t be long before we will have this to endure:

Submitted to Poynter Online’s E-Media Tidbits by Monique Van Dusseldorp:

“…another one that made me smile: doing the wave with your mobile phone. How does that one work? A Dutch company just launched SMSwave this week, at a baseball game of the Demon Astronauts in Amsterdam. First people in the audience register their participation by sending in their chair number via an SMS message - the ‘wave’ is then played out, by calling all registered phones in the right order, generating a wave of sound travelling the audience. Free to the audience, the service is open for sponsoring as well - users get a thank-you sms from the advertiser. Founder Jan Louwers has in the mean time patented the technology and is plotting away on making his sms wave global.”

Twenty-nine!

Filed under: Australia, New South Wales — Rick Eyre @ 12:00 am

South Australia have been bowled out for 29 by New South Wales today at the SCG. Nathan Bracken took 7/4. I haven’t looked it up yet, but I suspect it is South Australia’s lowest Shield score ever.

NSW are 2/230 just before stumps on Day One in reply, Phil Jaques 152 not out. Live scores at Cricket Australia’s new and convoluted website. CricInfo has a non-live, but otherwise dependable scorecard.

I wonder how many people realise that live scores of Pura Cup games are still available on the web. This is the third year that the shield has not been televised and I won’t stop moaning about it.

(Update: OK it is actually the second-lowest score in shield history. 27 is the lowest, also by South Australia, also against New South Wales, and also at the SCG. It happened on 18-19 November 1955, and the late NSW captain Keith Miller took 7/12 from 7.3 overs. Scorecard of the game at Cricketarchive.)
